Why Sleep Matters (Especially During Cancer Treatment)

Let’s talk about sleep—or the lack of it. If you’re going through cancer treatment, chances are your sleep might feel a little...broken. Whether it’s from treatment side effects, anxiety, or just trying to find a comfortable position (curse you, chemo aches!), getting quality rest can feel impossible.

Sleep has not been my friend this year. Between having a new baby who seems allergic to the concept of nighttime and the emotional toll of everything life has thrown my way, my brain feels like it’s functioning at half capacity. I forget words mid-sentence, lose track of what I’m doing, and sometimes feel like I’m wading through mental fog just to get through the day.

Cancer treatment throws its own curveballs into the mix. Between stress, physical side effects, and disrupted routines, getting a good night’s sleep can feel like a pipe dream. But here’s the thing: sleep isn’t just about avoiding under-eye bags (though, let’s be honest, that’d be nice too). It’s about giving your body the chance to repair, recover, and recharge.

If sleep feels elusive, start small. Try a bedtime routine: dim the lights, put your phone in another room (I know, it’s hard), and do something calming, like reading or meditation. If you’re struggling with pain or side effects, talk to your medical team about options. And remember: rest isn’t just about sleep. Lying down, closing your eyes, and giving yourself a break still counts.

This week, make sleep a priority. Even small tweaks can make a big difference in how you feel.
