What Confidence Really Looks Like During Cancer

What if confidence during cancer isn’t about being strong, brave, or put together?
I talk to a lot of young adults who say things like:
“I don’t feel confident anymore.”
“I used to be so sure of myself. Now I second-guess everything.”
I get it. Cancer shakes your world. It strips away routines, plans, energy, and control. So if you’re waiting to “feel confident” again the way you did before cancer? That version might not be coming back.
Confidence during cancer looks different—and that’s not a bad thing.
Confidence isn’t about having it all figured out. It’s about trusting yourself in the middle of the mess. It’s about showing up—scared, unsure, exhausted—and still doing the next right thing for you.
That is confidence. And it’s powerful.
Two Ways to Build Confidence Right Now
1. Practice tiny wins
Confidence builds from action, not waiting. Pick one thing you can control today—like saying no to something that drains you or taking a break without guilt. Small wins stack up.
2. Stop outsourcing your enough-ness
Your worth isn’t up for debate. Not by doctors, coworkers, Instagram, or that voice in your head. Start noticing when you’re looking for validation outside yourself—and call it out.
You don’t need to be who you were before cancer to be confident now.
This version of you—uncertain, bold, figuring it out as you go—is doing something hard every single day.
That counts.
That’s confidence.
