Rest is more than sleep

Writer: Lisa DunkLisa Dunk

Here’s a radical thought: rest isn’t just about sleeping. Mind blown, right? For years, I thought if I wasn’t getting a full eight hours, I was doomed. But rest comes in many forms, and all of them matter.

Why is sleep so often disrupted during cancer treatment? Let’s be real—there’s a lot working against you. Pain, stress, medications, and even treatment schedules can throw your sleep cycle out of whack. But instead of beating yourself up over not sleeping, let’s focus on other ways to recharge:

  • Physical rest: Lie down, stretch, or even try yoga nidra (a type of guided relaxation).

  • Mental rest: Take breaks from screens, practice deep breathing, or spend time in nature.

  • Creative rest: Engage in activities like drawing, knitting, or listening to music to soothe your soul.

For practical help, check out sleep apps like Sleep Cycle or Relax Melodies. And don’t underestimate the power of a good nap (more on that next week). The goal isn’t perfection—it’s finding what works for you in this season of life.
